"When should we book?" comes right after "How much will it cost?" in almost every first conversation I have with a family. My honest answer: earlier than most people think, but you don't have to be perfect about it.
I've been a Disney travel agent since 2010 and I'm a College of Disney Knowledge graduate. I'm also working toward my Authorized Disney Vacation Planner status. Here's how I help families figure out when to book, and what I've watched happen when they wait.

For most families, about 6 months to a year before you travel. I recommend booking at least 6 months ahead. Some of my families book more than a year out, and that's great too.
Here's why earlier usually wins:
I've had families wait to book and miss out. Prices can go up or down while you wait, but the bigger risk is availability. It's possible the resort you wanted just sells out.
Usually about a year out, for both hotel and tickets. Disney releases a new year in one big batch. 2027 Walt Disney World rooms, packages and date-based tickets went on sale April 16, 2026, for arrivals January 1 through October 31, 2027 (TravelPulse).
If you already know you're going in 2027, you don't have to wait for a sale to get started. We can get you booked now and watch for deals after.
Book early. I tell families that every time. Waiting for a deal that may never come for your dates is how people lose the resort they wanted.
Travel agents get notified when Disney releases sales and discounts. We look for deals after your trip is booked, too. If you see a new offer that might fit your trip, let your agent know right away. Depending on your booking and Disney's terms, we may or may not be able to adjust your price, but you can't get it if nobody asks. I dig into how this works in can a travel agent get me Disney discounts.
This is the part that makes booking early less scary. On a Walt Disney World vacation package booked 31 or more days out, you put down a $200 deposit and the rest is due 30 days before you arrive. If you cancel 30 or more days before arrival, Disney refunds what you paid, minus any third-party fees. From 2 to 29 days out, there's a $200 cancellation fee (Disney 2026 package terms).
So you can lock in your dates and resort early without paying everything up front. We also offer travel insurance, which I think is a huge benefit for families booking far ahead.
If you're staying at a Disney resort, bundle your hotel and tickets. In my experience, that's where families save the most, and a package lets you set up a payment plan. Tickets alone are paid in full when you buy them.
If you want to compare package prices yourself, Get Away Today sells Disney vacation packages. Use promo code FunParkGo for $10 off a package. More on spreading out the cost in Disney payment plans explained.
Yes, but it's harder. I've booked trips for families who wanted to go the next week. If you're booking for the next day or two, resort prices are usually higher. About a week out is usually OK, depending on the time of year and what's left. There's always a chance the resorts are full.
Also know that if you book a Disney World package 30 days or less before you arrive, the full price is due when you book. If your family is ready with dates and who's coming, the booking itself can take 10 minutes or less.
Booking your trip is the first date. A few more follow:

It does. Holidays, spring break and summer fill up first, so book those as early as you can. My family likes to go in January and February or September and October. Those are usually the best times for crowds and prices. If your dates are flexible, check out the cheapest time to go to Disney World in 2027 and what changed with 2027 ticket prices.
No. Everyone books on the same calendar Disney releases. What an agent brings is knowing when to book, watching for deals and keeping track of your dates.
Not yet. I'm working toward Authorized status. I'm a College of Disney Knowledge graduate, a Disney agent since 2010, and I've completed Universal's travel agent training.
I wouldn't. Book the trip you want, then let us watch for offers. Sometimes a new offer can be applied, depending on the terms.
No. Our planning is free, and your trip costs the same as booking with Disney. Here's whether a Disney travel agent saves you money.
